Tried Everything Under The Sun? Top 5 Tips To Stay Migraine Free This Summer!

19 July 2018

By: Dr Jessica Briscoe

Changes in weather can be difficult for migraine sufferers and this Summer has been a tricky time for many. Hot, humid days with abundant sunshine are ideal for many, but for migraineurs whose attacks are triggered by pressure changes and sunlight these can spell weeks of agony. But what can you do to stay migraine free?

Most people who suffer with migraine have multiple triggers which all work together to cause an attack. Obviously some triggers are more potent than others and these will vary between individuals so there is no “one size fits all” approach. However here are some tips for how to stave off attacks:

1. Stay hydrated. Summer is a time where we can become more easily dehydrated so our usual fluid intake may not be enough. I usually advise people to aim for 1.5-2 liters of water but you may need more in hot conditions, particularly if you are very active.

2. Eat regularly. Often people feel their appetite reduces in hot weather but our energy demands can be higher. It’s important to eat smaller protein rich foods during this time. Try to avoid the easy to reach, sugary snacks that are around particularly in ice-creams or iced lollies as these can cause wide fluctuations in blood sugar levels which may act as a trigger.

3. Invest in good quality sun-glasses. This is the time of year where it’s socially acceptable to wear sunglasses everywhere so take advantage of it. If your light sensitive flickers of sunlight can act as a trigger or just be very uncomfortable so having good quality tinted lenses can reduce the flicker and minimise attacks.

4. Keep active. It can be tempting to minimise movement during the hot weather but staying active can be important to reduce attacks. I wouldn’t advise running a marathon in the heat or embarking on a new high intensity work out but just taking yourself for a walk or going for a swim can help.

5. Stick to your regular sleep pattern. Sleep can be difficult at night during the heat and bright sunlight shining through the window can cause some people to wake up at dawn. Making sure you can keep your bedroom cool and ensuring your curtains or blinds will keep the light at bay (using an eye mask may help) can be particularly important at this time of year to maintain your usual routine.
